Page Source vs. Rendered DOM

Page Source
The raw HTML file exactly as the server sent it, before any JavaScript runs. This is what this tool shows, and it's the baseline markup most crawlers — including search engines and AI answer engines — read first.
Rendered DOM
The live page structure after JavaScript has finished adding, editing, or removing elements — what you see in your browser's DevTools "Elements" panel. On JavaScript-heavy sites this can differ significantly from the page source.

What This Tool Checks

View Page Source fetches the target URL through IndexCraft's own server-side proxy — since browsers block a webpage from directly reading another site's HTML — then parses the result entirely in your browser.

📄 Raw Source Fetch

Pulls the exact HTML a server returns for a given URL, before JavaScript execution.

🏷️ Meta Tag Extraction

Pulls out title, meta description, canonical, meta robots and viewport tags automatically.

📊 Quick Stats

File size, line count, character count, and counts of images, scripts and links.

🔍 Keyword Highlight

Highlights every occurrence of a keyword or tag name across the source view.

📋 One-Click Copy

Copies the complete, untruncated source to your clipboard.

⬇️ Download as .TXT

Saves the full source as a plain-text file named after the site's domain.

How to Use

Paste a full URL (with https://) into the input above, optionally add a keyword to highlight, and click View Source. The tool fetches the page, extracts key meta tags, and renders a line-numbered source view. Use Copy Source or Download TXT to save the complete file.

When a URL Won't Load

Some sites block automated/proxy requests, require login, sit behind a firewall, or serve different content to bots — in those cases the fetch will fail. As a manual fallback, most desktop browsers let you type view-source: followed by the URL directly into the address bar.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "view page source" actually mean?
Viewing page source means reading the raw HTML file a server sends before any JavaScript runs. It's the same markup search engine crawlers, AI crawlers and browsers start with, and it's different from the live DOM you see in DevTools after scripts finish rendering the page.
Why can't this tool read every website?
Browsers block a webpage from directly fetching another site's HTML for security reasons, known as the same-origin policy. This tool routes the request through IndexCraft's own server-side proxy to work around that. Some sites block automated requests, require a login, or return different content to bots, so a small number of URLs will fail to load.
Is view-source the same as the rendered HTML in DevTools?
No. View-source shows the original HTML delivered by the server. DevTools' Elements panel shows the live DOM after JavaScript has added, removed or changed elements. For JavaScript-heavy sites, the two can look very different.
Does this tool store or upload the pages I view?
No. The fetched HTML is processed and rendered directly in your browser tab and isn't saved on IndexCraft's servers. Note that the request itself passes through IndexCraft's own server-side proxy to reach the target site, so it isn't a fully local, offline process.
Can I use this to check if a page has noindex or a canonical tag?
Yes. The Key Meta Tags panel automatically pulls out the title tag, meta description, canonical URL, meta robots directive and viewport tag from the fetched source, so you can quickly spot a stray noindex or a missing canonical without scrolling through the raw HTML.
Why is the source only showing part of a very large page?
To keep the page fast and your browser responsive, the on-screen viewer displays the first few thousand lines. The Copy and Download TXT buttons always use the complete, untruncated source, so nothing is missing from what you copy or save.
